Merchandiser

Job description

It started with a kiss… Do you instantly see which product categories are top performers, where risks are emerging, and which opportunities you can seize right now? Can you back it up with data and a strong commercial mindset—without ever losing sight of the brand? Then we’re looking for you to join us as Merchandiser.

Mexx is an iconic brand within our group, with the ambition to create a modern, casual lifestyle. We design fashion that becomes part of everyday life—pieces that, once discovered, are worn, loved, mixed with other items, and truly owned. Everyday fashion for real people.”

We are currently in the midst of a transition to take Mexx to the next level. A strong, well-structured collection is essential—and that’s where your expertise as a Merchandiser comes in. This is a new role within Mexx, giving you the opportunity to shape the position, establish effective ways of working, and elevate the merchandising function across the brand.

As a Merchandiser you connect different insights into one clear story—by considering customer needs, what aligns with our brand, and how to ensure each collection is not only beautiful, but also delivers commercially. You set the commercial direction and take full responsibility for the collection architecture in your category. Working closely with the Business Director and aligning teams, you ensure that plans are not only developed, but effectively executed.

You always start with the consumer: you dive into behaviour, needs, and purchase drivers, and make sure product, price, depth, and messaging align. Not because it ‘feels right’ internally, but because it truly works in the market. At the same time, you monitor market dynamics—including competitors, pricing, assortment structures, and market shifts—and use these insights to guide product priorities, pricing strategies, and margin optimisation for our B2B and B2C channels.

Based on these market dynamics, you develop the seasonal collection with strong SKU discipline: determining where to broaden the assortment, where to go deep, which products are bestsellers or carry-overs, and where to introduce newness.

As a Merchandiser you safeguard the brand story across all customer touchpoints with clear agreements on segmentation, min/max assortment, and exclusivity. During the season, you lead daily and weekly trading, identify opportunities and risks, and steer with clear, concrete actions.

As a Merchandiser, you will be responsible for:

  • KPI ownership for our B2B and B2C channels: net sales, IMU/GMU, sell-through, stock turnover, markdown efficiency, brand equity, and collection efficiency.
  • Working collaboratively as part of a team, while taking the lead and ultimate accountability.
  • Analysing consumer behaviour, needs and purchase drivers and translating these into product, pricing, assortment depth, and messaging decisions.
  • Closely monitoring the market and competition and converting insights into product priorities, price corridors, and margin optimisation;
  • Building the seasonal collection architecture with strong SKU discipline (breadth vs. depth, heroes, carry-over vs. newness);
  • Driving pricing, IMU targets, markup management, and margin optimisation in partnership with Sourcing;
  • Ensuring a consistent, brand-right assortment across all channels for our B2B and B2C channels (O&O, e-commerce, wholesale, outlet, and marketplaces), including segmentation rules (min/max assortment, exclusivities) and the rhythm of newness;
  • Leading in-season trading: spotting opportunities and risks and adjusting through actions, such as chasing winners, depth shifts, flow adjustments, and markdown strategy;
  • Collaborating closely with Design, Sourcing, Planning & Allocation, and Marketing to align commercial priorities, stock parameters, and product storytelling.

What we offer you as a Merchandiser

  • Salary up to €6,000 gross per month (based on 40 hours), depending on knowledge and experience;
  • A fixed-term contract for 32 to 40 hours per week;
  • 8% holiday allowance and 25 annual leave days;
  • Travel allowance of €0.23 per kilometre;
  • Pension scheme;
  • 30% staff discount on our brands Mexx, Fred de la Bretonière and Shabbies Amsterdam;
  • Fun extras such as in-house chair massages, sports activities, Friday afternoon drinks, and annual events.

What you bring as a Merchandiser

  • A completed Bachelor’s degree (HBO level), preferably in a commercial field (e.g., Business/Commercial Economics, Fashion Management) or equivalent through experience;
  • At least 5 years of experience as a Merchandiser or in a similar role within fashion;
  • Strong analytical skills: you translate data and performance insights into clear commercial decisions;
  • Experience steering on KPIs such as sales, margin (IMU/GMU), sell-through, turn, and markdown efficiency;
  • You safeguard the brand’s value at all times, ensuring no commercial decision weakens brand positioning.

Who are we?

Mexx was founded in 1986 when the brands Moustache and Emanuelle joined forces. Combine the first letters of both names and add two kisses: M(oustache) + E(manuelle) + XX = Mexx. It started with a kiss…

A Random Thursday at our CR team

You start your day by getting a nice cup of coffee.

Followed by an online Global CR teams meeting whereby you give an update about HAG and we share knowledge and project updates with each other from all over the world.

You walk around the Belt Factory and have a chat with Titus, the Factory Manager, about the status.

Then you can join a lunch, with lots of nice food, in the canteen with a scenic view over the factory.

After lunch and a short stroll, you meet up with the Buying Manager and your manager, to discuss the status of certifications at the factories and materials.

Finally you sit down in front of your laptop and support your colleagues and customers with their questions on CR Compliance and Sustainability. You also do your weekly administration check and send a few emails to your colleagues in Bangladesh and China to get information about certifications of factories or ask about the status of certain issues in the factories which you need to communicate to a customer. Lastly, you check a customer CR manual and make sure that the ones involved at HAG are up-to-date.

At the end of your dynamic day, you are ready to enjoy a 'borrel' with your HAG colleagues or a HVEG Group party at a cool location.

A Random day as a logistic employee

As a logistics employee, I start the day with a meeting where we go over the tasks for the day, making sure everyone is ready to get started.

I then begin by carefully processing the returns. After handling the returns, it’s time for a relaxed coffee break with the whole team.

Next, I start picking and scanning orders for both B2B and B2C customers, ensuring everything is handled correctly and accurately.

In between, there’s time for a shared lunch to catch up with my colleagues.
Towards the end of the day, we get all the packages ready for shipment and make sure everything is neatly tidied up together.

This way, we wrap up the day on a good note and are ready to start the next day with fresh energy and a smile.
